Our Summer Term in Eggardon so far…

The children in Eggardon have worked so hard this term.  As you may know from your child, we started a new topic, ‘Influential Monarchs’ after we returned in April.  We started on Alfred the Great and are now up to Elizabeth I.  After half term we will continue onto The Stuarts right through to the modern-day monarchy.  I hope this has helped to give the children a sense of chronology and some understanding of key events in British history.  As many of you know we aim to do here at Thorner’s, we have linked all of our newly acquired knowledge to our literacy work and have covered lots of different styles of writing.  Last week we worked on Shakespeare’s Richard III and the children all created their own performances, wrote scripts, made props and directed themselves in groups.  Please see attached word doc of some final performances.
The topic will end in mid-June with the opportunity for the children to select one monarch we have studied and focus on them in more detail with a project of their own based on that person.  They will be given time in class and allowed time as homework when they can take it home and add to it.  I think this will give them the opportunity to work independently on an ongoing piece of work they have the freedom to choose.
This last week we have been working on poetry and based this on The Tudors – please see attached photos for some examples.  All the children will be bringing home their chosen completed poems – either an acrostic or limerick poem which they had great fun writing!
In Art lessons being based on ‘Landscapes’ with both myself and Mr Sitch, the children have focused on local Dorset landscapes and John Constable with Mr Sitch, and with me they have looked at a range of other artists famous for their work on landscapes.  We have explored the work of Monet, Van Gogh, O’Keefe and Hockney and created pieces of our views from school based on their style.  Please see some photos attached of our display and some pieces in their sketch books.
Whilst we all wish we could invite you into school to watch these performances and share these moments with us as we normally have always done, I hope this provides you with an insight into this term and what your child has been up to!
Next half term we look forward to lots of sports outdoors on the field, swimming and of course the final celebrations for our wonderful Year 6 children.
